"Our God Has Come to Save Us"
(Hildegard of Bingen to her convent on the lifting of the
interdict, 1179)
The upper reaches of the trees brighten.
God has heard and sent His aid.
Yesterday, I knew good news was near
when I saw a field of anemones
blowing gaily in the wind.
Like drops of Christ's blood, they spread
their crimson blanket on the
earth
to lift low hearts and broken wills.
Balsam, the refreshing air of spring,
this blessed ending of our ordeal.
Let us celebrate with our best bread,
purest white for Eucharist,
and let us chant so loudly
the angels will join in.
